President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified an amendment to the law to grant city status to Theinadhoo Island Council.

On August 30 last year, former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih granted city status to Thinadhoo through a resolution. However, Thinadhoo Island Council has not yet been converted into a city council due to differences in the interpretation of the law.

The President today ratified the 11th Amendment to the Decentralization act (Act, 2010/7), which was passed by the Parliament on March 18.

The amendments to the Bill have been proposed under Sections 51(b), (c), (c), (d), (b) and (c) of the Decentralization Act.

According to the bill, if the council representing the island or islands has less than one year to complete its term at the time of applying for the status of a city, then the status of a city will be granted only after the election of the newly constituted council, but if the term of the council is more than a year away from the expiry of its term, the island or island will be declared a city as per the amendment and converted into a city. it has been stated.

According to the bill, if a city is formed by the unity of all the islands within an administrative area, then the atoll council of an administrative area will be established from that time onwards, and the places maintained by the atoll council and the services provided by the atoll council will be maintained by the city council.

The 11th Amendment to the Decentralization Act has been published in the Government Gazette today, which will come into effect from the day it is passed, ratified and published in the Gazette.
