President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that e-wallet service will be launched in the Maldives this coming May.

The President made the statement in response to a question on 'Raees ge Javaabu' programme where he was asked if the government intended to introduce e-wallets.

"Efforts are ongoing in this regard. We are hopeful that the e-wallet service will be launched by May at the earliest," PresidentDr. Muizzu said.

Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim had previously said on 27 January 2024 that the administration had decided to hold discussions with the US government to establish e-wallet digital services and launch PayPal service in the Maldives.

"We have asked the Bank of Maldives to set up e-wallet services in the Maldives and start the process of ensuring that the government meets the requirements within this week. At the same time, we discussed with the US government to get access to PayPal, an e-commerce platform, to find a way to access these services," Nazim said in a statement.

President Dr. Muizzu's pledge is to work towards making PayPal accessible in the Maldives.
