President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has departed for Maafaru this evening for the inauguration ceremony of military drones purchased to maintain the Maldives' economic zone.

The drones brought in to maintain the country's economic zone will be unveiled at a ceremony to be held at Maafaru International Airport, the base where they operate.

While the Government of Maldives is yet to reveal the details of the military drones brought to the Maldives, it is learnt that the drones brought from Turkey are two of its indigenously developed 'Bayraktar TB2'. The government has decided to bring a total of seven drones.

Turkey's Baykar developed the Bayraktar TB2 in 2014.

Bayraktar TB2 holds the record in the Turkish aviation history for endurance with 27 hours 3 minutes and an altitude of 25.030ft.

The drone, with state-of-the-art military and communication equipment, has a full automated and communication services range of up to 300 km. It also has the capability to deploy laser-guided missiles. The drone has a payload capacity of 150 kg.

Capable of carrying out surgical precision strikes, the drone will be operated by a special team of MNDF.
