Mayor Adam Azim said 59.6 tonnes of garbage was collected from the streets of The Male' City on Sunday alone.
The streets were littered mostly with furniture and household appliances left by people after cleaning out homes for Ramadan. Such garbage is required to be disposed of by WAMCO at a separate fee.
However, due to the huge amount of garbage on the city's roads, WAMCO started collecting garbage free of cost yesterday and the City Council is also collecting garbage from the city's roads.
In a post on X today, Azim said that 200 tonnes of garbage has been collected from the capital in the last 15 days, which is eight containers of 25 feet.
" On Sunday, March 10, 2024 alone, 59.6 tonnes of garbage was collected from the streets of Male' City by the exemplary employees of the Male' City Council," Azim said.
Azim also appealed to the people not to make the road a garbage dump, adding that keeping the residential houses and premises clean would make it easier for everyone.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Azim said that this time the City Council does not have the capacity to collect all the garbage on the city's roads and hence, they are working with WAMCO to collect garbage from the roads.
Azim said the Council collects around 10 tonnes of garbage from the city's roads every day and WAMCO is also collecting the same amount.
"Preparing for Ramadan is not just cleaning up the house. But also ensuring that the surrounding environment is clean as well," said Azim.
He said the Council is trying to increase the garbage collection capacity in the near future and the works will be complete it in the next two to three months and the Council will also make it easier for the residents of the city to dispose of garbage.
