Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has decided to re-export goods imported by sea to the Maldives via air.
Speaking at a press conference held at MPL today, Chief Executive Officer of MPL Mohamed Wajih Ibrahim said that efforts are being made to empower the companies under the policy of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and to generate more revenue for the Maldives.
As part of this effort, the first phase of preparations for the re-export of sea-borne goods to the Maldives is underway, he said.
"We have already reached an agreement in consultation with the Maldives Customs Service and airport officials to expedite the process, especially to send goods imported by sea abroad," Wajih said.
He further said that a lot of goods have already arrived through Colombo and they are in talks with airlines to make arrangements to export the goods brought to the Maldives by sea and are making necessary preparations.
This will increase revenue and generate revenue in dollar terms, Wajih said, adding that once the company's internal arrangements are modernised, arrangements will be made to store a total of 3,000 containers.
Wajih said that the government is adding space to accommodate 150 additional containers at Hulhumale' Port to overcome the space crunch faced by "bonded warehouses" for tourist services.
