Parliament has condemned Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef Umar's speech at M. Dhiggaru yesterday.
Speaking in Dhiggaru, Minister Shareef said the parliament posed a challenge to President Muizz to implement his vision and policies.
"I'm a little embarrassed because the lawmakers in the parliament are people who have worked with me for four-and-a-half years," he said.
In his speech, Minister Shareef said he sometimes wonder if he could contain himself from violence if he was still in the parliament.
Condemning his speech, the parliament issued a statement that the government has a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the lawmakers and the public. Furthermore, Speaker Mohamed Aslam also expressed concern over the safety of the lawmakers.
The statement said that the Ministers speech incites violence and it is inappropriate language for a minister. Parliament said such language hampers the safety and security of the members of the parliament.
Parliament condemned the statements made by Minister Shareef at a time when MPs are receiving threats, adding that the parliament would like the government to cooperate with the parliament in its efforts to ensure the safety and security of its members.
"The Speaker urges people not to encroach upon the privilege of parliament by anyone," the parliament statement said.
In a post on X today, Adam Shareef said that he had meant that metaphorically, and apologised if it came across differently.
