President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the administration will look into salary increments for local council staff based on education qualification.
The President was asked during 'Raees ge Javaabu' programme by an employee of the Manadhoo Council Office whether the government would work in this regard as the civil servants working in the council offices did not have the opportunity for salary increments after their studies.
Replying to the question, President Dr. Muizzu said that as categorised by parliament, the councils are in the lowest level, which is the biggest problem in this regard.
The President said that he wanted to find a solution when the salary structure is formulated in the future. He said that unlike other offices, the council employees work holidays and since the councils are always open, the employees have to work all the hours.
"But then again, I would like to address this issue in the future when it comes to making our pay structure. I have seen the council staff very closely. So, I know the hard work done by the council staff," he said.
He said there would be legal issues in this regard and a solution could be found only through legal changes inside parliament.
The President said that this was something he had tried to resolve when he was the Mayor of male' city and that he would try to do so.
"Within the Parliament, I will try to ensure that the council's civil servants are able to easily make progress in the standards that need to be studied based on studies while on the job," he said.
He added that he would try to find a solution to the problem with amendments to laws and regulations within parliament.
