The Male' City Council has removed 108 vehicles that have been parked on the roads for a long time.

According to a post posted on Male' City Council's X yesterday, 52 vehicles were removed from Male' city and Hulhumale' last week as part of the process of removing vehicles that had been unused on the streets of Male' city and Hulhumale'.

"A total of 108 vehicles have been removed so far from the project," the Male' City Council said in a statement.

The programme to remove old and unused vehicles from Male' city roads to address the congestion issued was launched on February 17.

Launched jointly by the Ministry of Transport, Police, Male' City Council, HDC, Customs, MTCC, Housing Ministry, WAMCO and Economic Ministry, the programme aims to address the increasing number of vehicles in the Male' area and ensure road safety.

On February 17, the Transport Ministry had said it had constituted an urban traffic-related congestion management committee comprising relevant agencies to launch the bar vehicle eradication programme, which had finalised what could be done in the short-term and long-term and prepared a schedule of how the works would be carried out.

The plan for the first phase of the programme includes:

  • Removing vehicles that have been kept unused on the streets of Male' and Hulhumale' for a long time
  • Allowing those who want to voluntarily dispose of the vehicles
  • Identifying vehicles parked illegally on the roads of Male' and Hulhumale' and towing them as per the law
  • removing vehicles parked on the road without registration from the road
