President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the electricity bills of mosques will be reduced from next month.
He added that the administration is looking into ways to reduce electricity expenses for the councils as well.
Speaking to the people of Kulhudhuffushi City as part of his visit to the northern islands, the President said that as per the parliament's law, the councils have to spend a lot of money on electricity out of the limited amount they receive and the councils have to pay electricity bills at an expensive government rate.
"I have spoken to the management of STELCO and FENAKA. As a first step, from this next month, we will reduce the electricity cost of mosques in all the islands, including Male' City, Kulhudhuffushi City, all the islands and all cities, to the domestic rate instead of the current government rate to be paid in the bill to be paid for that electricity," he said.
He said that once the electricity bills of the mosques are reduced, the monthly cost of electricity by the councils will come down drastically and efforts will be made to find solutions even if STELCO and FENAKA lose millions in profit.
"We will find different ways for FENAKA to earn. We are trying to make FENAKA a profitable company. In the coming years, once FENAKA's debt is cleared, we will also make efforts to reduce cost of electricity for streetlights, parks and public spaces to the domestic rate as well," President Dr. Muizzu said.
The President also announced that a major project to build council offices in 50 islands will be launched this year.
