Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has said that 90 percent of the projects initiated by the previous government for the development of the fishing industry have been stalled.
Speaking at a meeting held at the Social Centre to meet the people of HDg. Hanimaadhoo this morning as part of the President's ongoing visit to the island, Minister Shiyam said that the previous government had neglected the fishing industry and as a result, some of the fishing boats were used for various purposes and some boats are just docked in the lagoons.
Shiyam said the fishermen had three main concerns - the delay in receiving money for the fish, the lack of ice availability and the lack of storage, which means that fishermen have to spend a lot of time in the queue to weigh the fish.
Shiyam said the previous government had not done enough to resolve the issues.
"Ninety percent of the projects initiated by the previous government for the development of fisheries are stalled, especially the storage project and the ice supply projects," he said
Shiyam said some of the agreements for the development of the industry by the previous government will be cancelled, and the current administration would address concerns in the industry at a faster pace.
The minister added that his government will address all the concerns of the fishermen.
