Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been elected as the new leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the Maldives' largest political party, following the close of nominations without any other contenders.

The MDP announced on Tuesday that with only Shahid nominated for the position within the designated timeframe, he has been deemed elected unopposed.

The MDP leadership position became vacant when former President and MDP leader Mohamed Nasheed left the party. While the MDP National Council temporarily appointed then-Vice President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the acting leader, Solih currently holds the position.

Normally, an internal election would be held if more than one candidate contested the post. However, according to the party's amended constitution in 2022, if only one candidate is nominated, they are automatically elected without the need for a vote.

Shahid served as the Foreign Minister in the previous Maldivian government. He also previously held the position of Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives.

Additionally, he served as Foreign Minister under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Throughout his career, Shahid has been a Member of Parliament for several terms, holding roles such as Member of the President's Cabinet, Member for Keyodhoo, Member for Henveiru North Constituency, and Member for Vaavu.

Notably, he also previously served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives during his time as a Member for Keyodhoo.
