President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that it is a presidential pledge to to pay fishermen within 48 hours of weighing their catch, adding that efforts are underway to fulfill this pledge.
During his visit to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll today, the President met with residents of Faresmaathodaa, and stated that the delay in payments to fishermen is due to the current economic situation. He highlighted that the previous administration had borrowed over MVR 120 billion from external sources. Additionally, government companies owed over a billion Rufiyaa to private companies.
The President emphasized that the money owed by government companies includes payments due to fishermen.
"Our goal is to establish a system where fishermen are paid within 48 hours. This is an essential part of our economic manifesto," he said. "We need to work hard to achieve this goal, and we are committed to making the economy resilient."
He emphasized the importance of reaching this target, stating that delays would only hinder progress and affect the well-being of fishermen.
The President acknowledged that the government had previously failed to fulfill its obligations to fishermen. He noted that despite already disbursing MVR 440 million, a significant amount of money remains due.
President Muizzu also mentioned ongoing efforts to upgrade both international and domestic airports as part of the economic recovery plan. He further declared the government's intention to offer support to Maldivian businesses in securing materials needed for major government projects.
The President reiterated that all these efforts are aimed at revitalizing the economy. He acknowledged the government's responsibility for the current debt situation but expressed confidence in the improvements currently underway.
He concluded by expressing his vision for a Maldives with sustained economic growth and improved living standards for all citizens.
