The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the Maldives' largest political party, has seen former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid throw his hat in the ring for the party's presidency.

Shahid announced his intention to contest the MDP presidency in a recent social media post. In the post, Shahid acknowledged the "great sacrifices" made by MDP and the Maldivian people, and emphasized the need for everyone to work together to take the Maldives forward.

Following Shahid's announcement, he has called upon party members for their support and endorsement for the MDP presidency.

With Shahid expressing his interest in the MDP presidency, several party members and activists, along with a large number of supporters have begun campaigning for him.

The opportunity to run for the MDP presidency will open later this month, with the election for the position scheduled for the second day of next month.

The MDP presidency became vacant after former President Mohamed Nasheed left the party. However, the MDP National Council temporarily appointed former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the party's president. He currently holds the position.
