President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the judiciary has been functioning without any interference from the government since November 17.

Delivering the Presidential address during the parliament opening session today, President Muizzu assured that the government will continue to provide full cooperation and assistance to the Parliament, and the judiciary.

"The government will provide full cooperation in addressing the space constraints faced by the judiciary. As I stated in my address, after taking the oath of office as President of the Maldives, from that day onwards, the government's influence on the judiciary has ceased. Our government will uphold this principle," he said.

He further added that he would follow through on his pledge to let go of any urge for revenge. As such, he stressed that he will not arrest or punish individuals, on political grounds.

"Peace must be upheld in the country, and I will take action to ensure my words align with my actions. However, we will maintain the rule of law. I will fulfill my duty as the head of state to guarantee justice and fairness in the state. Additionally, we will not interfere with the judiciary. If I discover that any government official is exerting such influence, I will take immediate action. I am confident in stating that the judiciary has been functioning without any interference from the government since November 17, 2023," he added.

Furthermore, the Government will present to this esteemed Parliament a proposal for essential legal adjustments regarding the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), aiming to curb any potential political interference in the judiciary.
