With 20 new resorts, the government aims to release more than 2,800 beds to the market this year.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, while delivering the presidential address at the opening ceremony of the Parliament this year, stated that the government aims to open 20 new resorts and create 2,857 beds in the tourism sector.
In addition to this, efforts have been made to identify the problems and hurdles in the development of the islands, lands and lagoons leased for tourism development.
"A joint policy is being formulated by the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Finance, MIRA and The Economic Council to complete and bring 63 projects allocated for tourism development to the market. The work will be completed in a week's time," he said.
He said that a policy would be formulated and implemented to help the islands complete their work by restructuring the lease agreement and investments for the development and completion of the undeveloped areas, and tourism would be expanded to the atolls.
"A special tourism development plan is underway for Addu City to launch a 'Asseyri Tourism' project for Addu City with a seaplane hub," he said.
He further said that a Visitor Economy Council was established in the Cabinet to expand tourism services in the Maldives and introduce mice tourism to make the country a destination for major international conferences and events.
The President also said that the country's aim is to expand tourism services in the Maldives in the fields of education, culture, heritage, health and the environment.
