President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that arrangements will soon be made to provide daily payments to fishermen.

Delivering his presidential address at the opening ceremony of the Parliament this year, the President said his government would expand the country's fisheries, reap the benefits of the exclusive economic zone of the country and introduce new forms of fishing.

"We will increase fish production and increase the number of foreign markets where they can be sold," President Dr. Muizzu said.

He said that the government has so far released MVR 329 million out of the amount that was not given to the fishermen by the state-run companies when he took charge of the government and was trying to provide the remaining amount at the earliest.

" The government's aim is to ensure that fishermen are paid on a day-to-day basis. We will do it soon," he said.

He said a series of trainings called The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme will be launched this month to impart skills required in the aquaculture sector to the youth, build hatcheries and develop the capacity to revive marine life in the country.
