MDP and The Democrats have decided to boycott the presidential address to begin this year's parliament session.

A member of MDP's PG group told One that the decision was taken at a meeting of the PG group held on Sunday night. MDP will announce the decision to boycott the presidential address tonight.

"It has come to the notice of the party that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has invited three ministers who have not been approved by the parliament for the presidential address as ministers. It is illegal for three ministers who have not been approved by the parliament to be invited to the presidential address as ministers," The Democrats said in a statement.

The Democrats said they would not encourage such constitutional violations.

"It is for these reasons that The Democrats will boycott the presidential address on Monday," the Party said.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's presidential address on Monday will be his first. The President will arrive at the Parliament between 0825-0845hrs and the presidential address will begin at 0900hrs.

This is a statement that the President is obliged to make under Article 84 of the Constitution in order to open parliament every year.

The President's Office said that this is a presidential statement that the President will highlight and reveal some of the most promising and important issues for the Maldivian people and the country.

Article 84 of the Constitution states that every year, in the first sitting of the first session of parliament, the President shall make a presidential statement explaining the situation in the country and outlining the policies that need to be taken to improve the situation of the country.

Once the President delivers his presidential address, the Speaker will conclude the session.

According to parliamentary rules, the leader of the opposition in the Parliament has to respond to the president's presidential address in parliament.
