According to data released by Finance Ministry, the government's debt rose to MVR 124 billion at the end of last fiscal year.

At the end of the fiscal year, the total domestic borrowing surged to MVR 73 billion, while the external debt level rose to MVR 51 billion at the end of the fiscal year.

The state's debt stood at MVR 124 billion at the end of the fiscal year, an increase of MVR 10.5 billion from the figure at the start of last year.

At the beginning of last year, the state's debt stood at MVR 114 billion, the domestic debt at the time was 65 billion rupees, and foreign borrowings stood at MVR 49 billion.

According to these figures, domestic borrowing surged by MVR 8 billion at the end of last year, while foreign borrowing surged by MVR 2 billion.

The state's debt has been increasing from one year to the next, and in 2026 it will have to pay USD 1 billion (MVR 15.4 billion), the year when the state will have to pay the largest debt in one go.
