The Democrats’ Parliamentary Group has decided not to approve some of the ministers in the cabinet of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The decision was taken unanimously after discussions at the party's parliamentary group meeting today. The decision was taken because The Democrats were extremely concerned about the policies pursued by the government of President Muizzu, they said in a statement.
"The Democrats believe that a strong opposition political party and opposition members of parliament are essential to hold the government accountable to the people and maintain a system of democratic good governance," the statement said.
The party said it is part of the responsibilities of members of parliament to hold government and ministers accountable, and as an opposition party, The Democrats' PG will continue to act responsibly and honestly. The same will be done with the approval of ministers.
Their decision comes at a time when the issue has been put on the agenda of an extraordinary session of the parliament being held right now.
Recently, The Democrats and the MDP held a joint press conference. The two parties have decided to work together to hold the government accountable.
At the press conference, The Democrats' President Hassan Latheef said that what the government said before the presidential election does not match the way things are happening now. In particular, government actions affect foreign relations, he said.
MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail told the press conference that there are serious concerns about the government's actions and if the government wins a majority in parliament, it is expected to retain many rights. The two parties decided to work together to bring about the necessary legal changes in parliament to improve the country's democratic future, he said.
The two parties are working together to amend some laws, they said at the press conference.
