FENAKA has said they are trying to move a generator from another island to Fuvahmulah city until the power issues are resolved.
In a statement, FENAKA said they use seven generator sets to supply electricity to the city, with the city recording the highest load of 4,850 kW. The average highest load was 4,050 kW.
Generators used in Fuvahmulah include
- Two generator sets of 800 kW each
- Three generator sets of 1,200 kW each
- One generator set of 600 kW
- One generator set of 1,000 kW
FENAKA said the 800-kilowatt generator in the City was damaged in December due to problems and major parts were damaged. As such, the power generation has dropped to 4,000 kW.
FENAKA said that due to the rainy season, the service was not required due to the low power consumption, but since the power usage was expected to increase once the weather improved, they are trying to bring an 800 kW generator from another island, which was yet to be installed in the island. They said the project was shelved after numerous people highlighted that this could create issues in the long run.
FENAKA said that due to improved weather and opening of schools, the load has increased and power is being cut from different places on schedule from January 11 onwards. Although the process of procuring an 800 kW genset to resolve the issue has begun, at present a genset of the required size is unavailable in the Maldives.
FENAKA said that the company is working on procuring a 1200 kW genset for the City ahead of Ramadan while efforts are still underway to repair the damaged genset.
In the statement, FENAKA further said that due to lack of focus on maintaining the gensets over the past few years, the condition of many generators has deteriorated and the majority has not been overhauled even after 30,000 hours of operation of the damaged generator in Fuvahmulah.
