India has revealed that the country will be hosting the second high-level discussions between India and the Maldives, on the withdrawal of the Indian military from the Maldives.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted during a press brief that the core group of two countries has held the first high level discussion on the issue recently.
Addressing the issue of the withdrawal of Indian troops, Jaiswal suggested that the matter would be discussed at the second meeting of the India-Maldives core group, scheduled to take place in New Delhi early next month. The first core group meeting on January 14 in Male extensively discussed the issue of Indian military personnel.
"Both sides held discussions on finding mutually workable solutions to enable the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medvac (medical evacuation) services to the people of Maldives," stated the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement following the meeting.
In a statement after the meeting, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry noted that India had agreed to expedite the withdrawal process and agreed to repatriate their troops based in the Maldives.
The Foreign Ministry also stated that the second discussion will be held in India, however a confirmation on the exact date was not given.
The India-Maldives ties came under some stress as Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, widely seen as a pro-China leader, maintained after assuming charge as the president in November that he would keep his election promise of evicting Indian military personnel from his country.
A row erupted on social media earlier this month when a minister and some other leaders in the Maldives used derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he posted a video of him on a pristine beach in Lakshadweep.
Maldivian President Muizzu asked India to withdraw all Indian military personnel deployed in the island nation by March 15 even as the two sides held the first meeting of "High-Level Core Group" in Male that primarily focused on the contentious issue.
The next meeting of the "Core Group" is set to take place in New Delhi early next month.
