Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has said the current administration has not publicised the former government's agreements between Maldives and India because they are lawful.
Speaking at the 'Fehi. Thanavas. Male' rally by MDP on Thursday night to campaign for MDP's Male' mayoral elections, Shahid said that the current administration had resorted to fear mongering amongst the public regarding the agreements with India. Shahid said leading up to elections, the current administration had portrayed the agreements as a threat to national security and the country's sovereignty.
"The current administration, when they were the opposition, kept asking to reveal the agreements with India stating that there are clauses that are a threat to national security. We kept telling them that the 241 committee can view all the documents. And that we will publicise the documents we can under law. Now that they are in office, the current administration is saying the same thing we said. That they cannot publicise the agreements because it is between two states," Shahid said.
Shahid said that the former government had not taken any steps that would have jeopardised the national security and have not signed any agreements that would endanger the country's sovereignty.
Shahid added that the current administration had said the former government had signed over 100 agreements with India, and that over the past 55 days, the current administration has been saying they are reviewing the agreements. He said that if the government were to review two agreements a day, they should have reviewed it all by now.
Shahid also spoke on how the current administration has not been able to give a final number on the amount of Indian military personnel in the country.
