Maldives has agreed with China not to have any relations with Taiwan that could undermine its sovereignty.

In a joint press statement, the Maldives stated that it is firmly committed to the one-China principle, recognizing that there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.

"The Maldives opposes any statement or action that undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposes all "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, and will not develop any form of official relations with Taiwan. The Maldives opposes external interference in China's internal affairs under any pretext and supports all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification," the statement added.

The previous government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also said that the Maldives is with China on the issue of Taiwan.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. It is located at the junction of the East and South China Seas in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, with the People's Republic of China to the northwest.

Fifteen countries have recognized Taiwan as an independent country. The United Nations (UN) has not yet recognized Taiwan as an independent country.
