Aishath Azima Shakoor, who is contesting for the mayoral seat on behalf of the ruling party, has filed a petition in the High Court challenging the Civil Court's order to pay MVR 4.1 million to Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
The High Court said it had received an appeal yesterday, but no decision has been taken yet on admitting the plea.
The Civil Court's ruling against Azima to pay MVR 4.1 million to MIB was based on a complaint filed by MIB alleging that a loan of MVR 3 million taken by Azima to buy a Platinum Residence flat was not being fulfilled as agreed. The Civil Court ruled in the case on the second of this month.
According to the chargesheet, the trial proved that MIB had given a loan of MVR 3 million to Azima to purchase a flat in Platinum Residence, but since she had not been paying for the loan as per rules, Azima has to pay MVR 4 million to the bank.
Azima has been ordered to pay the amount monthly within the next six months. The flat will continue as a mortgage in the Islamic Bank until the payment is made.
The Male' City mayoral elections are scheduled to be held on Saturday.
According to the law, a condition for contesting an election will be violated if a person fails to pay as per the court's verdict in the case of proved debt, but if a condition is violated during or after the election, he/she will lose his/her post.
