Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has been summoned to parliament and served a notice for questioning to explain why the Maldives has not apologised to India for insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The notice was issued to Zameer by South Galolhu MP Mikail Ahmed Naseem. According to the notice, Mikail has asked Zameer two questions.

"Why has the government not apologised to India in an official capacity even after a group of deputy ministers of the government mocked and humiliated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media? Why are these deputy ministers not being sacked in this regard?," Mikail said.

In a letter to Speaker Mohamed Aslam, Mikail said that the harassment of Modi by three deputy ministers of the government has led to tension between the Maldives and India, due to which Indian tour operators and travel agents are cancelling bookings made by different Indians to come to the Maldives.

"The country is going to be in a situation where the country's economy will suffer irreparable damage, and Maldivians who depend on India for medical treatment and other basic necessities will have to face hardships," Michael said.

"Therefore, we request the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations to summon these deputy ministers and all relevant government officials to ensure that the government takes appropriate action in this regard," Mikail said.

The three deputy ministers involved in the alleged abuse of Modi were suspended yesterday, including deputy ministers Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef and Abdullah Mahzoom Majid, at a time when there has been widespread criticism over the issue.
