The government has said they held talks with the US government to establish e-wallet digital services in the Maldives and start PayPal services in the country.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office this evening to announce the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said that discussions were held in the Cabinet to address the barriers to accessing funds through online payment systems.
"We have asked the Bank of Maldives to set up e-wallet services in the Maldives and start the process of ensuring that the government meets the requirements within this week. At the same time, we discussed with the US government to get access to PayPal, an e-commerce platform," Nazim said.
He said the cabinet also discussed seeking access to other platforms such as PayPal, adding that the government would also hold discussions with them to seek help from the UAE and Turkey to carry out special efforts to strengthen cybersecurity in the Maldives.
President Dr. Mohamed's Muizzu had pledged during his campaign to work towards making PayPal accessible in the Maldives.
