President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has visited the houses damaged by the rains in Male' city.
Heavy rains have lashed the capital since last night, inundating houses and shops. The President visited the worst-hit houses this evening to take stock of the situation.
President Dr. Muizzu was accompanied by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon.
The Meteorological Department (Met Office) has also issued an orange alert for from K. Atoll to ADh. Atoll for heavy rains and flooding.
An official of the Met office told One today that the current spell of rainfall in the country is due to the time when the southwest and east monsoon meet and 75 mm rainfall was recorded between 8 am and 11 am today.
The rainfall is expected to continue for the next three days and the weather is expected to light up over the next weekend, he said.
As a large part of The Ameenee Magu in Male' city is flooded and water is entering many houses and shops on the road from near STELCO to Dharubaaruge. Residents of these houses have come out and are trying to control the flow of water into their houses by putting sand bags and a plaque near some houses.
MNDF is also trying to control the rising water level in the capital.
MNDF Fire and Rescue Service firefighters (FRS) have been pumping out water from the streets since 8:30 a.m. following heavy rains in Male' city. The water near IGMH, Voice of Maldives, West Park, Maafannu Stadium, and Hulhumale' ferry terminal are being pumped by MNDF.
It is raining across the country, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a post on X today, adding that 20 houses in four atolls were flooded and people were evacuated from three houses to other places after being damaged in the rains.
The four islands that were reported to have been affected by the rains are F. Nilandhoo, K. Guraidhoo, L. Gan and Fonadhoo and S. Maradhoo.
