Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, who is running for Male' City Mayor on the PNC ticket, has said that she will introduce a master plan to solve the traffic problem in the city within the first 100 days of office.

Speaking at the mayoral debate, Azima said the traffic problem in the city will not be solved without pedestrian-friendly roads.

"There should be roads where children can walk safely to school. The public bus service we have set up is more expensive than a taxi. A very serious, proper master plan should come. Hopefully I will introduce a master plan for the traffic problem in the city within my 100 days," he said.

Azima said the causes of the traffic problems in the city should be identified and there is a total governance failure in the city. She also highlighted the current use of the police tow yard.

"If you look at the reasons for the traffic problems in the city, the police are saying today that they are now trying to avoid towing vehicles. That means there is no space in the tow yard. For three months, they park vehicles there for free. They can park vehicles on the road and use them until they are sold, that's one problem," she said.

Azima added that the city's vehicle problems are so crowded that there is no cap on the number of vehicles used in the city as per the law. The rules state that vehicles that are five years old cannot be imported into Maldives, but the previous government has abolished that too, she said.
