A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed to start the process of setting up a special fisheries college to impart the knowledge of fisheries industry.
Minister Ahmed Shiyam signed on behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries at a ceremony held at The Maldives National University (MNU) today, while Vice Chancellor Dr. Shehenaz signed on behalf of MNU.
Speaking on the occasion, Fisheries Minister Shiyam said that there are already a number of jobs in the industry, but there are few Maldivians who have been prepared under the system for these jobs.
"If there is a system in place to provide education and training, then we can create knowledgable Maldivians to take over the jobs that are currently being done by foreign workers. We know through such a system that we will increase the engagement of Maldivians in new projects or other aspects of the industry," the Minister said.
Speaking on the occasion, MNU Chancellor Dr. Mahmood Shaugy said that the existing college will initially start with short courses, but in the long run, fisheries, eco-culture, marine science, etc, are areas where the country can find a world position in research and education.
The establishment of a fisheries college is one of president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's presidential pledges, which has been included in his manifesto to begin within the first 100 days in office.
