The government has announced that it will start air ambulance services in March.
Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim told a news conference at the President's Office that the Cabinet meeting discussed the procurement of air ambulances and the necessary preparations to provide the air ambulance services.
The air ambulance service will be launched on March 1, 2024, he said.
Two air ambulances have been procured in collaboration with Maldivian, he said. Nazim said it would be regulated by a special agency that has already been set up for that purpose.
The introduction of the air ambulance service in the Maldives is a presidential promise of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
During the campaign, the President announced that he would roll a seaplane airplane as a pilot project and convert one of its aircraft into a fully equipped air ambulance.
If the pilot project is successful, more aircraft will be brought in to expand the air ambulance service, he said. The President said that this will make it easier for all airports to move patients from one place to another quickly.
