Maldives Media Council (MMC) has said that it has not received any complaint regarding the two websites blocked by the government for operating without registration and blocking the websites is a matter of concern.
The Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM), which comes under the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, blocked two websites critical of the government, kurusee.com and dhiyavaru.com yesterday.
In a post on X, MMC said, Section 36 of the Media Council Act states that unregistered news magazines and websites are also 'media'.
"There has been no complaint filed with this council regarding the content of the two blocked websites and blocking without rules is a matter of concern. This is an impediment and threat to the freedom of the press," the MMC said in a statement.
Section 36 of the MMC Act defines 'media' as "media" for television, radio, interactive CDs, websites, day newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, trade publications, etc., by registering and unregistered in the Maldives.
