The current administration has said that it will neither shut down nor block any newspapers or magazines registered in the country under laws and regulations.

In a post on X today, President's Office senior spokesperson Mohamed Shahyb said two websites that are unregistered were blocked last night - kurusee.com and dhiyavaru.com.

Over the past few days, both sites have published articles criticising some of the government's decisions.

When contacted, Shahyb assured that this government will ensure that the freedom of the press is maintained to its fullest extent.

The government has come under fire from the main opposition party, MDP and the public for blocking two anti-government sites, with MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail saying in a post on X that blocking news websites critical of the government is a dangerous signal and he is concerned about it.

He said the only obstacle to the expansion of the tyranny of the present government is that the government does not have the majority in parliament.
