State Electric Company (STELCO) aims to generate 33 percent of electricity in 30 islands from renewable sources, the company's Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said.

"About 15 years ago, a watt of solar was available for USD 1.5, but now it is available for 50 cents or 60 cents," he said. He further emphasized that President Muizzu had stated that 33 percent of the Maldives' electricity could be generated from renewable energy after looking at the prices.

Fahmi said 33 percent of electricity could be generated from renewable energy and that figure could be increased to 50 percent.

He said solar installation in the capital city is a huge task for local companies and they should seek the help of a foreign company to do so. He revealed that STELCO is already in talks with some foreign companies.

Fahmy added that the previous government's project to install solar panels on the bridge highway is a good project and the project will generate six MW of electricity. The Environment Ministry is working to connect the solar panels to STELCO's grid, he said.

He said the solar panels will benefit and should be enjoyed. However, the government's intention is to relocate the solar panels as residents complain that they cannot see the sea while traveling on the highway.
