The passport of the Football Association of the Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel has been withheld due to an ongoing corruption case against him.
A reliable source confirmed to One Online that Bassam's passport has been seized at the request of the police under a court order.
While Bassam's passport has been seized, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem said last week that Bassam will be charged within the next two weeks after gathering evidence in the case.
Police raided the FAM House last month on the order of the PG to investigate the misuse of foreign funds. Under a court order, police went to the FAM to obtain evidence for a criminal investigation into the association's financial transactions.
FAM employees have not been paid for several months. There are also major debt issues, and many people are complaining about the FAM. Police told some media outlets that they had recovered evidence from the FAM's documents and were investigating the case.
Responding to the allegations of money laundering and fraud, FAM officials have said the allegations are personal. The FAM has informed FIFA that it has not done anything in the case and has brought the matter to the attention of FIFA and the AFC.
