Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam has said that he will refer the matter of MP Abdulla Jabir damaging parliament property to the Ethics Committee of the Parliament.
The Speaker of the Parliament said that Jabir had damaged the property of the Parliament yesterday.
The microphone on Jabir's desk was damaged and the microphone was broken. The repairs cost MVR 5,100, he said.
Aslam said the Ethics Committee of the Parliament is responsible under Article 110 of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament to advise the Speaker on the action to be taken. Therefore, under the powers of the Speaker of Parliament under the Rules of Procedure, Jabir's case will be referred to the Ethics Committee of Parliament, he said.
Noting Jabir's action, Aslam said all property in the parliament hall and inside the parliament is the property of the state and therefore he urged no member to do anything that could damage it.
Jabir shouted at the Speaker and some members of the parliament after having lost the election for Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He received 23 votes in the election while Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem was elected as the new Deputy Speaker with 51 votes.
Dissatisfied with it, Jabir shouted in the parliament that night as well. Jabir shouted at yesterday's session by getting out of his chair and sitting on the carpet. He also went to the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, MP Saleem and shouted.
