The government has launched 'Magey Solar' programme to help reduce the electricity bills of households in the country.

The programme is part of the 14-week manifesto of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to ease the concerns of the people of the Maldives. The programme was launched by Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim at a ceremony held today.

According to the ministry, installing solar panels on the rooftops of households under the programme will help reduce power generation and fuel emissions.

Speaking at the launch of 'Magey Solar', Minister Thorig said, "the ministry will cooperate in improving the networks in the islands and making the engines efficient to help in this regard."

Minister Thoriq pointed out that since the Maldives is completely dependent on foreign imports, about 13 percent of the country's output is spent on oil and since the country is not an energy producer, energy always has to be imported.

"If you look at these units with money, 800 million USD goes into energy or fuel energy annually. Also, if you look at it, MVR 2.3 million is being spent as fuel subsidy to various companies," Minister Thoriq said.

The Ministry said that under the first phase of the programme, a total of 3 MW solar PV system will be installed on the rooftops of households and by resolving existing hurdles, the benefits of renewable energy resources available in the country will be available in a smooth system in the pockets of the people.
