Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolence to the government and peoeple of Sri Lanka following the multiple explosions in Sri Lanka.
Minister Shahid condemned the “heinous terroristic attack” claiming numerous lives and injuring many. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the government and people of Sri Lanka and the affect families.” The Foreign Minister’s message said.
New media outlets have reported that six near simultaneous blasts have hit three churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka this morning as the Christian community observes Easter Sunday.
The targets of the attack are St. Anthony's Shrine, and the three hotels are in Colombo, Shangri-La Hotel, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury which are frequented by foreign tourists. The other two churches, Katuwapitiya Church, is in Negombo, a Catholic majority town north of Colombo, and the eastern town of Batticaloa.
The latest reports say that the death toll have risen to 50 and over 200 people are being treated for injuries in the aftermath.
While there have been no confirmed reports of any Maldivian deaths, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry has said that they are closely monitoring the situation and asked the families with concerns to reach out to 798-3400 in Maldives and 947-2727-7072 from Sri Lanka.
