Mohamed Nazim's Maldives National Party (MNP) has lost its status as a party in the Parliament.
The number of MNP members in the Parliament has dropped to two following the resignation of Ahmed Usham, who was a member of MNP.
Usham resigned from the parliament after being appointed as the Attorney General of this government.
Usham, MNP leader, Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz are the other MNP members in parliament so far. Following Usham’s resignation, Nazim and Riyaz will be on the parliamentary register as independent members.
According to Article 33 of the Parliament Regulation, a party loses its status as a party if the number of members to represent it in Parliament falls at any time below three.
With this change, there are now 56 MDP MPs on the parliamentary register. The minority party, The Democrats, has 13 members. Then the members are divided into two JP members, two PPM members, three PNC members, two MDA members and four independent members who do not belong to any particular party.
