Maldives National Party (MNP) has lost its representation as a party in parliament.

Speaker Mohamed Aslam said that the party's strength in the parliament has come down to two after villimale' MP Ahmed Usham resigned from the parliament.

Usham resigned from the parliament after he was appointed Attorney General of the current government.

In addition to Usham, MNP members present in the parliament include party leader Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz. Nazim and Riyaz will be included as independent members after Usham's resignation.

According to Rule 33 of the Parliament Act, if the number of members representing a party in parliament after being elected to parliament is less than three at any time, it will lose its representation as a party.

"I would like to announce this under Article 33(b) of the Parliament as the party has lost its representation under Rule 33(c)2 of the Rules of Parliament to represent the Maldives National Party in parliament," Aslam said.

With this change, there are currently 56 members of MDP, 13 in the minority party The Democrats, two members of jumhooree party, two from PPM, two from PNC, two from MDA and four independent MPs.
