The Parliament has accepted the motion to dismiss MP Eva Abdulla as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and has sent a notice to the lawmakers on the matter.

The no-confidence motion to remove Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla from the post was filed on November 13 with the signatures of 50 lawmakers, including 49 MDP lawmakers and independent MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla (Mosta) of Nolhivaram constituency.

One of the main reasons cited for the motion was that Eva as acting Speaker prevented Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's no-confidence motion from proceeding.

MDP had earlier moved a no-confidence motion against Eva, but the motion was later withdrawn.

On November 13, Nasheed resigned from the post of Speaker of parliament amid protests in the parliament.

According to the rules of the House, if a no-confidence motion is moved against the Speaker or Deputy Speaker, the notice has to be sent to the Speaker and the Members of Parliament within three days of the decision to proceed with the matter, and after the expiry of 14 days of the notice, the resolution has to be placed before the meeting on the next non-official holiday day.
