Former President Abdulla Yameen has opted out of attending the Presidential Inauguration of President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Speaker of the Parliament has sent an invitation to the former President to attend the swearing-in ceremony at the Republic Square tomorrow evening. The invitation was sent by the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammed Nasheed.
President Yameen recently received ease of restrictions of his sentence, as he was allowed to move outside for sports, exercise, and socializing.
However, after he was transferred to his home, the corrections department threatened to take action if he continued meeting his supporters and participating in political events. Since then, Yameen has not met with his supporters.
When asked about President Yameen's attendance at the inauguration ceremony, Adam Shameem, one of his lawyers, said that the former President does not believe it is good to attend the ceremony at this time.
Therefore, he has already informed the Parliament that he will not attend the session, he said.
Shameem said the President believes that a person serving a criminal sentence to attend such a dignified and prestigious gathering would detract from the dignity and honor of the gathering.
He also believes that it is against the norms accepted in civilized societies.
