Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam has said that he plans to hold more sittings to complete the pending bills in parliament.
Of the 153 bills introduced in parliament since this government came to power, 30 are still pending in various stages, including important bills to reform the judiciary, to amend the Criminal Procedure Code and bills related to protection of the workplace.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament, Aslam said he was looking into the parliament's operations to make it more functional to gain public confidence. He said he would look into the bills that need to be taken up but did not specify which bill they are.
"There are some important bills that need to be finalised. There are reforms too. Considering the work schedule, I now have three meetings a week. If we have to hold more meetings after talking to the SG, we will also hold more meetings to see if we can continue the work," Aslam said.
Aslam said the committee is still working on 25 bills in the parliamentary committee stage, of which 21 are directly submitted by the government.
According to the Attorney General's Office, the government has introduced 153 bills in parliament in the last five years, of which 120 have been passed by parliament, ratified by the president.
On the current budget and supplementary budget in parliament, Aslam said the budget can be sent seven days ahead of the end of the session after which the debate will begin and a vote will be taken up.
