President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to appeal against the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ruling that allows the Maldives to lose part of its territorial waters within the first 14 weeks of assuming office.

Dr. Muizzu pledged during his election campaign to find the waters the Maldives claims to have lost. He said he would pursue other pledges after appealing the ITLOS ruling.

On April 28 this year, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ruled on the disputed territory of the Maldives and Mauritius.

Mauritius has proposed to divide the 95,600 square kilometers into two parts, so that the Maldives will get 47,172 square kilometers and Mauritius will get 48,458 square kilometers. Mauritius has advocated that 200 miles should be located in the north of the lagoon, which is closest to Addu in the Chagos Archipelago.

However, the Maldives insisted that it was not part of the coast of Mauritius, and that it was only visible at low tides and that it was not a direct part of Chagos, and that if you look 200 nautical miles from that reef, Mauritius will get 4,690 square kilometers of land undeservedly.

The distribution of the disputed waters between the Maldives and Chagos should be looked into from the coast of Chagos as advocated by the Maldives, the island nation advocated.

PPM/PNC has claimed that a large part of the country's territorial waters has been lost due to the decision, and the coalition has accused the government of selling the lost waters.
