MP Hassan Afeef's decision to conclude Parliament session citing that the no-confidence motion against Nasheed was submitted unlawfully has been submitted to the Ethics Committee.
Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, who presided over the parliament session held this morning, concluded the session after 49 MDP lawmakers signed a motion to remove President Mohamed Nasheed from the post of Speaker of the Parliament.
Majority Leader of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam told 'One' today that this motion was put on agenda after completing all administrative procedures and complying with the rules.
Aslam said that the speaker cannot dismiss the matter when the parliament office had taken such a decision as it was a violation of the rules of the parliament and that the speaker did not have that power. Afeef's decision was in violation of the rules of the parliament and therefore, an ethical case has been filed with the privileges committee of the parliament regarding Afeef.
"Afeef has taken the decision in violation of the law. The Parliament also suggested that the case could go ahead. Once all administrative processes are completed and a matter has been put on agenda, the Speaker cannot decide that the case cannot proceed. It is not the power of the Chair by parliamentary rules. Afeef's decision was too authoritative. Therefore, the matter will now be referred to the Ethics Committee on behalf of MDP PG," Aslam said.
Parliament's Ethics Committee Chair and Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Raaee said Afeef's decision to dismiss Nasheed's case was in violation of the rules of the parliament and decided to investigate the matter.
He said the matter has been referred to the Ethics Committee and a meeting of the privileges committee will be convened at 1300hrs to look into the matter.
Stating that Afeef's decision was illegal, the parliament house rescheduled the matter. The agenda for the session was scheduled for 1130hrs and held under Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.
Eva, however, concluded the session by saying that the case was dismissed.
