Parliament session for the removal of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been cancelled again due to Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla calling in sick.

The parliament meeting, which was scheduled to be held today, was scheduledat the behest of the MDP.

The issue was first placed on the agenda of Sunday's parliament session after a 14-day notice was given to the parliament rules over a no-confidence motion to remove Nasheed from the post of speaker with the signatures of 48 lawmakers.

However, the session could not be held due to the absence of Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

The issue was placed on the agenda for Monday and yesterday as well. But both the meetings could not take place due to Eva's absence in the Parliament.

Article 205 of the Rules of Parliament states that the Deputy Speaker shall preside over the meeting where the motion for removal of the Speaker is filed, but it does not specify what to do next if any of them is unable to preside over anything in the matter.

However, Article 44 of the Parliament Rules states that in the event that the Speaker and The Vice-President are unable to preside over the proceedings, one of the five members of the Parliament appointed under the Constitution can preside over the proceedings.

MDP has filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that the no-confidence motion against the Speaker is not being conducted in violation of the constitution and the rules of the Parliament.

MDP has sought Supreme Court ruling that as per Article 44 of Parliament rules, a member should be appointed to head the Parliament in the Deputy Speakers absence.

Additionally, MDP is also seeking a motion that Parliament cannot address any other issue until the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed is finalised.

The matter has been listed on the agenda for Monday in the Supreme Court.
