MDP's parliamentary groups stated it will not interfere with the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
MDP's PG had earlier said that it does not consider Dr. Muizzu's oath in the chair to be legally valid until a decision is taken on the no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Parliament, MP Aslam said that he discussed with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih the oath of office of the President-elect after the no-confidence motion was moved against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
"[President Solih] stated the PG should not interfere with the ceremony. I conveyed the message to the members of parliament. I do not believe in attending the ceremony," Aslam said.
Aslam said that if a meeting was convened to take Dr. Muizzu's oath without taking a decision on Nasheed's no-confidence motion, it would be illegal, but the swearing-in session would not be stopped in such a way that it could be stopped.
"However, our parliamentary group does not have the spirit to disrupt such a meeting," Aslam said.
Aslam said the party's PG also wanted Nasheed's case to be resolved quickly and he would attend the swearing-in ceremony, but he made a statement indicating that if Dr. Muizzu was sworn in under Nasheed's chairmanship, the lawmakers who did not want to attend the meeting had the option.
"Then such a meeting will be quorum even if we don't include the 55 MP's in our parliamentary group," Aslam said.
