The Interim Office has of the President-elect has advised the government not to trade in Hulhumale' land during the interim phase of the change of government.
A press release issued by the Office said that the Interim Office has received information that 40 different items related to various business transactions related to land in Hulhumale' have been placed on the agenda for the next meeting of the Urbanco Board.
"Since Hulhumale' lands are the most valuable 'assets' of the State of Maldives, this Office is concerned that the commercial transactions related to these lands are carried out expeditiously at this stage," the interim office said in a statement.
According to the office, the transactions involved "leasing" land to foreigners.
The statement said Urbanco's decision could hinder the implementation of policies of the new government.
"At this stage, such transactions are kept on hold and all institutions, institutions and companies are requested to abide by the spirit of the interim process," the interim office said in a statement.
The statement added that the interim office will continue to do its utmost to prevent such acts and protect the higher interests of the people of the country through institutions within the legal system.
