The no-confidence motion of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been scheduled for Sunday at the People's Majilis.
The 14-day notice sent to the Speaker and Members of Parliament expires today.
Under the rules of the Parliament, Sunday is not a day when the Parliament is required to sit, so it is only for the no-confidence motion. Therefore, only that issue is on the agenda of the session.
According to the rules of the Parliament, the General Committee of the Parliament will determine the time for debate on no-confidence motions and the time for the respondent to answer the no-confidence motion. The session was scheduled to start at 9:00 am.
The no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament will be heard on Sunday, but questions have been raised about whether the session will continue.
According to the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament is required to preside over the session where the Speaker is agendaed to be removed from office.
However, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah did not attend the session on Wednesday due to illness.
Therefore, MDP, which filed the motion, has expressed doubts about whether Sunday's session will proceed.
The same thing happened in the previous no-confidence motion against the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament. That time, the Speaker did not attend the session where the no-confidence motion against the Deputy Speaker was on the agenda.
