N. Maafaru Airport's fuel farm has been inaugurated.
A special ceremony was held at Maafaru Airport on Tuesday to inaugurate the fuel farm. Island Aviation Service (IAS) Managing Director Mohamed Mihad and Managing Director and CEO of Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), which financed the fuel farm project, Mufaddal Idris Khumri were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, IAS Managing Director Mihad said Maafaru airport currently has 700 flights a year and the number can be doubled with fuel farm.
The fuel farm will increase international flights and benefit islands near Maafaru, he said, adding that the fuel farm will provide more funds to the IAS.
The fuel farm has:
- Storage capacity of 400,000 litres of jet fuel
- Capacity to refuel flights
- Bowser used to refuel the flight will have a capacity of 35,000 litres
- Second bowser will have a capacity of 20,000 litres
- Be run as per international best practice with safety measures in place.
Maafaru airport has seen a large number of private jets landing at the airport, with over 400 private jets last year.
Maafaru Airport was opened in 2019 and was financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The ADFD has spent USD 60 million to build the airport.
The ADFD has built the Maafaru airport to accommodate a Boeing A320 flight and a Boeing 737. The length of the airport's runway is 2,200 metres.
