Maldives Parliament has accepted the impeachment motion of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and has sent notice to the members.

The Director of Media of the Parliament, Hassan Ziyau, told One Online today that the Parliament has accepted the impeachment motion and sent notices to Nasheed and the MPs today.

According to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the notice regarding a motion of no confidence in the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of Parliament must be sent to the Secretary-General of Parliament, the Speaker and Members of Parliament within three days.

According to the rules of the House, the resolution must be submitted to the session held on a non-official holiday at the earliest after the expiry of the notice period of 14 days. It was the 29th of this month.

Before that, the General Committee of Parliament will have to schedule the debate on the resolution and the time for Nasheed to speak. Any further work of the Parliament will be done after a decision is taken on the resolution.

The no-confidence motion was moved for the second time on 29th last month. The motion was signed by 49 members of the MDP parliamentary group.

The no-confidence motion was first signed by 54 MPs in June However, the case was withdrawn after the first round of the presidential election.

Since the issue has been raised once, Nasheed has questioned whether the resolution can be carried forward. In a message to the Parliament's WhatsApp group, Nasheed said the no-confidence motion is expected to be taken up in the next session. That is because such a case has been filed and withdrawn in the past this term.

MDP PG Leader, Hithadoo North MP Mohammed Aslam said the no-confidence motion was withdrawn after some MPs asked for it to be withdrawn.

The reasons for withdrawing the no-confidence motion were also to secure the space he needed to work with The Democrats, to which he belongs, and to expect the Speaker to comply with the rules of procedure. However, nothing has happened that way, he said.

Therefore, this time all the members who passed the no-confidence motion against the Speaker will work as a unit, he said.
